## Month-by-Month Timeline

> **⚠️ Starting mid-September 2026?** The ideal May–August prep window has passed. Below is an
> **accelerated 10-week plan** that gets you from zero to lights-on by early December. It's tight
> but doable — especially if you buy from Australian suppliers (1–2 week delivery) instead of
> waiting 6 weeks for AliExpress. A simpler first-year display (WLED + roofline, skip the mega
> tree) is strongly recommended for a late start.

Australian-specific: Christmas falls in summer, so you're installing in hot weather, dealing with UV exposure, afternoon storms, and long daylight hours. Plan accordingly.

#### Week 1–2 (mid–late September) — Research, Measure, ORDER

## House Measurement Worksheet

### What to Measure

You need to measure every section of your house where pixels will go. Work systematically around the house.

**Key measurements:**

1. **Roofline** — the ridge line along the top of the roof
2. **Eaves / fascia** — the horizontal edge under the roof overhang
3. **Gable peaks** — the triangular section on gable ends (measure both sides of the triangle)
4. **Ridgelines** — any hip or ridge lines you want to outline
5. **Gutters** — front edge of gutter if mounting there
6. **Windows/doors** — perimeter if outlining them
7. **Ground features** — fence lines, garden edges, driveway length
8. **Vertical drops** — height from mounting point to ground (for cable runs and power injection)
9. **Prop locations** — distance from house to mega-tree, other props

### How to Measure

- Use a **laser measure** for accuracy (under $50 at Bunnings)
- For rooflines you can't reach, measure the ground-level equivalent and add 5–10% for pitch
- Photograph each section and annotate the photo with measurements
- Measure in **metres** — convert to pixel count after

### Calculating Pixel Count

**Formula**: `Section length (m) × Pixel spacing (pixels/m) = Pixels needed`

Common spacings:
- **Roofline**: 33 pixels/m (30mm spacing) — standard density
- **Eaves**: 20 pixels/m (50mm spacing) — good for wash effects
- **Props/outlines**: 33 pixels/m (30mm spacing)
- **Dense detail**: 50 pixels/m (20mm spacing) — matrix panels
- **Economy spacing**: 10 pixels/m (100mm spacing) — long runs, budget option

## Pre-Install Checklist

Run through every item before you go on the roof. It's much harder to troubleshoot at height.

## Show Night Checklist

The moment of truth — first public showing.

### Before Sunset

- [ ] Run the test sequence in daylight — verify all sections respond
- [ ] Walk the entire display — check for loose pixels, drooping cables
- [ ] Verify timers: what time does sunset occur? Schedule show to start 15 min after
- [ ] Check FPP web UI is accessible from your phone (for emergency control)
- [ ] Ensure FPP is set to auto-start on boot (in case of power outage)
- [ ] Clear any tools, ladders, or installation gear from the yard

### Audio (If Applicable)

- [ ] FM transmitter powered on and broadcasting
- [ ] Test from a car radio — tune to your frequency, verify audio quality
- [ ] Volume levels balanced between songs
- [ ] Sign made with FM frequency for passers-by: "Tune to FM ___._"

### Timer & Schedule

- [ ] Show start time set (e.g. 8:30 PM — after dark but not obnoxiously early)
- [ ] Show end time set (e.g. 10:30 PM weeknights, 11:30 PM Fri/Sat)
- [ ] Idle/off sequence set for between show times (all off, or gentle static)
- [ ] Christmas Day / NYE: consider extended hours
- [ ] Verify schedule handles midnight rollover correctly

### Neighbour Relations

- [ ] Knock on immediate neighbours' doors — let them know show times
- [ ] Ask if the timing works for them (babies, shift workers, light-sensitive)
- [ ] Offer to adjust end time if needed
- [ ] Keep music volume reasonable (or FM-only to avoid noise)
- [ ] Provide your phone number for any concerns

### Camera & Social Media

### Documentation (Do This First — While You Remember)

### Removal & Labelling

- [ ] Coil strings gently — loops no tighter than 30cm diameter
- [ ] Use velcro ties or loose cable ties (not tight — don't kink the wire)

### Inspection

- [ ] Check for melted/warped pixel housings (black roofs get extremely hot)
- [ ] Test any suspect strings before storage — easier to mark dead ones now

- [ ] Check controller boards for corrosion or water ingress
- [ ] Inspect PSUs for rust, dust buildup, or burnt smell

The best displays grow over years. Don't try to do everything in year one.
